AI Visualizers vs 3D Mesh Models: A Technical Comparison

Why we built an inline AI photo editor instead of a 3D wireframe engine, and why it's the future of exterior contracting.

For two decades, the exterior contracting industry has relied on a single technological approach to visualization: 3D mesh modeling. Companies like Hover and EagleView built massive empires by turning 2D photos into 3D wireframes.

But 3D modeling has a hard ceiling. It requires 8 perimeter photos, extensive computational power, and human-in-the-loop processors to fix the meshes. This results in a 24-hour turnaround time and high per-project costs.

The AI Image Generation Paradigm

At CurbClose, we looked at the massive leaps in generative AI and realized that building a 3D model was no longer necessary to visualize a roof or siding.

"If you only need to show the homeowner what the front of their house will look like, why spend 24 hours building the back of it?"

How Architectural AI Works

  • Depth Reading: Our AI processes a single 2D photo and understands the spatial depth, distinguishing a roof pitch from a flat wall.
  • Semantic Segmentation: It identifies the exact pixels that represent shingles, siding, and trim, while isolating and protecting trees, shadows, and sky.
  • Inline Texture Mapping: It dynamically wraps the exact manufacturer textures (like GAF Timberline HDZ) over the segmented areas, bending the texture to match the perspective of the original photo.

The Business Impact

Because we bypassed 3D modeling entirely, the business economics for the contractor change drastically. The marginal cost of an AI render is pennies, meaning we can offer unlimited, flat-rate subscriptions. More importantly, the latency is zero. The render happens instantly on the driveway.

The 3D wireframe was a necessary stepping stone. But generative AI is the final destination.
